Michael Schumacher will retire from Formula One at the end of the season, the German confirmed immediately after winning the Italian Grand Prix at Monza this afternoon. His Ferrari team circulated a press release containing the announcement while the German national anthem rang out for Schumacher, 37, on the winners' podium, and the driver then told the world in his own words a few minutes later. Schumacher, who has driven in Formula One since 1991, said: "It has been a very special day, to finish in this style, looking at the championship and at what's going to happen in the future. "There's been a lot of discussion about my future, the fans all have a right to be explained what's going to happen. "Sorry it took longer than you wanted, but you have to set a right moment. At the end of this year, I've decided with the team to retire from racing. "It has been an exceptional time. I've loved every single moment, the good and the bad." During his 16-year career, Schumacher has driven for Jordan, Benetton and Ferrari, won a record 90 Grands Prix and taken seven world titles - another record. He paid special tribute to his family and friends and said that it had been down to them that he had been able to continue at the top for so long. Schumacher added: "Particularly, I want to thank by Dad, my passed away Mum, and my wife and kids, who all the time supported what I was doing. To survive and to perform would have been impossible without them. I can't thank them enough. "Also to my mates at Benetton and Ferrari. I have so many friends there and it has been a really tough choice not to work with them at this level any more. They're just so great. The day has to come though, and I feel this is the moment." Schumacher will be replaced by Finn Kimi Raikkonen at the team next season. Felipe Massa will keep his seat. He truely was a Legend of F1 Hey BigSteak, who will be your favourite driver after this Legend is gone??

He will be gone, but a wave of younger talented drivers will come: -Raikkonen, Button, Alonso, Rosberg, Kubica.. I think every single race will be interesting, cause of even teams and drivers in the next season. Ferrari: Massa, Raikkonen Renault: Fisichella, Kovaleinen Mclaren: Alonso, De La Rosay Honda: Button, Barrichello I think next season will be more interesting than this year's, what about you guys

finally someone who is smart and quits on the highest point of hes career instead of jsut goin on and on and be really shotty in the end, cause that is what people will remember then, not all ur winnings but that u were good and then u went on to long and then u began to lose it all..
very smart of him to stop on a high note..

Yes, F1 has/had many racers who were good in the 90s but then got up with all lame teams with lame cars and get always the lames points in grand prix. Villeneuve is one of these, who won WC but then started to suck step to step. But now he has changed the whole sport from F1 to normal car racing, as many other _has beens_. But Shumi will have still a huge position in Ferrare, maybe even the guy to replace Todt. He knows a lot of thing wich he can give to new ferrari drives, and he knows what kind of things made him champion. Hopefully gives good advices to Kimmiiiee Rekkinen

Somthing i found about him: Michael is the highest paid racing driver in the world and second highest earning sportsman in the world, earning a reputed $80 million US in 2004 ($40m of which was his salary from Ferrari). His younger brother Ralf became the third highest paid driver in Formula 1 in 1999, when his pay after the 2000 season was raised to $15.5 million US 2005: Becomes first billionaire athlete, according to EuroBusiness, and donates $10 million to the Tsunami victims Iron, i think u should add more zeros at the end of ur predictations
