If you want major in the game you have to collect experience points.
You gain levels during combat, if you have 4 levels in 4 different things, battle sense, your class etc... you'll be major.
If you switch class and gain levels for that class to you can become general...
But it doesn't mean so much... you have to check the advantages each level up does to you and pick those...
Most usefull imho are:
4 levels for shooting: akimbo pistols... can help you alot...
4 levels in battle sense: You are able to see mines
3 levels medic: Instant revive is a real asset for your team
4 levels engineer: flack jacket ( more protection against splash damage like nades panzers etx)

PS. Don't try to focus on collecting points though, it's poor taimplay and if you play the game as a teamplayer you'll be gain levels fast enough...
